Lauhala Peahi (fan) Weaving JULY 28

Peʻahi lauhala is a traditional Hawaiian handwoven fan made from the dried, prepared leaves (lauhala) of the hala (pandanus) tree. The term peʻahi means to fan, wave, or beckon.

Materials used: The blades are woven from intricately plaited lauhala strips and reinforced with a bamboo or wooden spine acting as the handle

Design: Traditionally shaped in a trapezoid or crescent, they often feature sophisticated geometric weaving patterns.

Royal Significance: Historically, elaborate crescent-shaped fans (peʻahi niu) were restricted to Hawaiian aliʻi (royalty) and sometimes braided with highly prized materials like human hair.

Cultural Use: Beyond beating the heat, they were symbols of rank and hospitality.
